Just not there yet

we are going through a ICT age when reason why we do things we do, it just don't make sens. The HBO documentary Beware the Slenderman was a frightening example. The documentary tells the story of our generation, we are so lost and we must learn to do it the right way. The internet is the Wild West of our time. Welcome back cowboy. 

The dark web with Alan Pearce at TEDxBrighton explains the dark alleys of internet. Would you leave it to chance your child would not stumble in tho the darker parts of internet hoods. Earlier I presented the algorithm that a video chairing service uses the same roads internet provides. One click and curiosity leads to an unknown destination. At kindergartens and schools the dangers should be explained to personal and a good example should be planted. Internet should be cleaned by us users and society need to control this virtual part of our life. Like work, traffic and other parts of our life is controlled. WE CAN'T HANDLE INTERNET.

Dreams

Let us dream fore just a moment. The understanding the ethics of what is appropriate we are not there yet. By teaching better things to do then bullying and exploiting things that should be left alone. When sens is out the window it's sad to follow the path we are walking with ICT (information communication technology) from the moment children start using different devices the understanding fore what the impact kan be when producing material fore others to see. Make internet better not like the boy that made a trip to the forest and found something he should had left alone. Yes Paul Logan lost control and just got confused in the fast times we are living it's so easy to share our experiences and forget people around us and their fealings. Then again just watching  Casey Neistat on YouTube "A Special Time" he realized "I didn't record anything fore this trip" and he's wife commented "Smart", some things are just better to just enjoy. From educational aspect we are lost and I can se it but no one cares we are enjoying "tecno joy" and blinded by it.

Child came and told me that he made a ?Pad. He might be the one that makes next generation of devices whit whatever and beyond our imagination. There is still a bit to go but maybe this is an prototype.

The divided line

My worries about how we handle Information and communication technology (ICT) for both own children and professionally.

Kindergartens and schools are searching for the right ways to handle ICT, schools are finding it hard to find apps for iPads or other devices they have the same for kindergartens. The biggest risk is how screen time is used and what I call passive use the sort that just gets time floating bye. Going toward more finding solutions and learning how IT can be used as an tool to find out learning something. We are often lost when facing new things and that's what I'm experiencing with ICT in my work all the loose ends and some of them is growing to be a security risk now we should take kontroll this is to be a tool not a big part of what children do. Playing games can be fun and some studies shows it develops us in some ways it is also addicting and makes us less social face to face, yes we can play with others online but that just doesn't have the same effect as interacting with someone live.

The seed has been planted but we can't just hope it grows there needs to be something done and that something needs to be the right things, not just in some direction.

four years old child made this together with me with the purpose to learn how the hands dosn't show when the animation is made. The hands yes how do they disappear that is something parents wonder about.

More then animations.

I have always used IT equipment in different purposes before we started making animations. Drawing some educating games searching for information and other things. Also educating parents in there obligation to supervise their children's use of different media age restrictions should be enforced and some things just don't make sense don't go there. Control that some things could be educating and have some purpose. There are times when fun must be allowed and supervised free time on computer, tablet ore other mediadevice must be granted.

Content is inportant

The App is important and what if it the App makes the user passive and by that I mean that the learning process is not supported by the activity provided. The meaning when using computer or tablet is setting up a goal and how to reach the goal can be decided by the child/children in the group. The Application used can not set boundarys but support the structure and help childrens fantasy and open mindnes we should secure this forse. Give your self the time it takes trye fail and do it again.

 

Still going strong

When given the chance why not iPad and now pedal to the metal and explore everything that can be done with the devise of the wise and beautiful.  Yep the time has come to take iPad in use hopefully soon some useful apps coming for educational use. Open for ideas.

Everything is questioned now and then

The frightened ones give them time and tools they will make it in a world with computers tablets and other technical  equipment that can be used in learning children. I'm down for a count professionally what comes to use of IT with children that's why this blog is one hold will uppdate something made with my own children soon.

My story bits and pieces my screenplay

When I was a young boy I got a video camera as a Christmas present and documented family life and made own camera tricks. Edited the videos on VCR player that allowed no mistakes ore it had to be done all over again. With some of my friends we did a parody of a known TV series we filmed on the streets of Vaasa and at a Friends home it was fun to make. Sadly the tape was recorded over I suspect my dad so I don't haw it anymore.  Years went by....

When I started working doing summers as a young boy and got my first paycheck I bought a new video camera with the small screen on the side so you didn't have to keep your nose to the battery and look through the small screen. Documenting life as it went by and capturing moments to remember. When my family started to take shape it felt important to record and in the only way besides memories capturing times we got our dogs, when our children were born their childhood where we lived went on vacation and everyday life. Some wedding's and other happenings have been saved on tape by me fore friends and family. And then..

Working with children and letting them make own films and animations started about 2003 when the personal made a film about Child's day at kindergarten. Then 2005 I attended Videotivoli in Tampere FINLAND a film festival fore children at the time. There I got to animate with Annemette Karpen from the Danish Animationhuset also met Earling Eriksson that introduced the BOX and cutout animation.

And 2007 I attended a seminar as a speaker medialiteracy.info a Nordic Conference on Media Education. I presented the way I work with children animation and film making the fact I work on a practical level made a big impact on the audience especially researchers that had the plan but the actualization was missing.

Since then I have been involved in various projects, I'm strongly concerned about children and youth in today's media jungle and yes “it’s a jungle out there”

The main concern teachers have is lack of time but my concern is not the time you have but how you use it, educational goals can be achieved in more ways but one the Finnish school system is doing well in world wide measures but there is always room fore improvements and development. The future is tomorrow and children the content.

Editing the animation

When the pictures has been taken it´s time to edit and ad sound. We edit with a video editing software from Pinnacle Systems or Microsoft's Movie Maker. Pinnacle be course it's easy fore children to use and Movie Maker because it is free fore Windows. Fore Mac I would use iMovie.

Let children take charge.

It's lunch time and we sat down at the table a child started planning an animation with a worm. I got inspired and said yes let’s make the background and go from there. And we have a new Nokia Lumia 625 phone to take the pictures with and now we are making a simple and short animation hmmm short let’s see when we start.

Collaborations a sensitive process

Some time back about eight years it was decided to get in contact with the national broadcasting company in Finland and get a movie shown on a children’s program that children had made from storyboard to editing but the answer was no. Do to the quality of the film and they did not have appropriate shows listed to air. The film was about “A day at kindergarten” from breakfast to afternoon. We were surprised by the denial from national broadcasting company but not disappointed and we did an extraordinary happening for the premier of the movie. 


ACTION!

It was a evening full of anticipating when we got to borrow a local cinema fore the premiere of the film A day at kindergarten. Parents and gran parents where invited. Local press was called children felt like stars when media interviewed them "En dag på dagis " as the film is called in Swedish was a success and a memory fore life. Every child got the film on DVD to watch at home in the future.

Did attempt to get a mobile phone manufacture in Finland to collaborate with children and the possibility to animate and make films with the camera on a mobile phone but the answer was not interested. Some time later film director Spike Lee gathered film clips and made in my taste a peculiar production fore the same company. I have teach children to animate with mobile phones because that is something they carry with them and the animation can be watched when the pictures are rapidly seen on the phone. One we made was Taitava nalle as can be seen in earlier blog text Could animating be easier from 2008.

By taking contact and collaborate with different companies the meaning in doing increases for children it doesn't mean it needs to be in astronomical measures but small things can spark ideas for a enterprise and working towards a goal outside kindergarten.
